AUGUST

The Dept of Early Learning is having an orientation for individuals interested in home or center licensing for child care.  It is August 20th from 9-4:30pm at WWCC in room 185. To register call 509-736-2812.

The Fair is coming!! The 27-31st. August 5th is the deadline to turn in your application for art, cooking, sewing, photography etc. The parade is Saturday August 30th and to start the parade off there is a kid’s parade with prizes for costumes, pets, small floats. To join meet behind the Backstage Bistro by 8:45am.There is a permission slip the adults must sign. For more info call 527-3247. Visit the Education Building at the fair from August 27-31st to see student artwork, technology projects and pick up information.  They will also have interactive children’s activities this year.

SEPTEMBER

TMN member Katie Christianson has announced the new Jitterbug Dance fall classes.  Classes are for 2-12 months, 12-24 months and 24-36 months.  Visit www.jitterbugdanceww.com or call 526-5469.  For TMN members, the annual registration fee is waived. 

Helpline is looking for volunteers to assist with next April’s SoupPort  - a soup luncheon that raises funds for Helpline’s programming.  Call Dan Willms at 529-3377 or dan@helplineww.org

The Christian Aid Center is seeking certain items for donations. They include: coffee, shampoo, laundry detergent, toothpaste, deodorant, eggs, napkins, toilet paper, razors, noodles, spaghetti sauce and diapers size 4-5. Call 525-7153 for more information, they are located at 202 W. Birch.

The Whitman College Writer’s Workshops have been scheduled for 2008-2209 by TMN member and Professor Katrina Roberts. They are free and open to the public. 

St. Paul’s ice cream social is Wednesday September 3rd to meet the new pastor Father Birch and celebrate school. The event will be on the front lawn from 6-7:30pm with an assortment of ice cream, toppings and goodies.  This event is free. 

TMN SPECIAL EVENT: Some TMN members have organized a playgroup for Moms and kids from 12 – 24 months.  They will be meeting on Fridays at 9am.  The first event will be Friday September 5th.  I will let you know this week where the playgroup will meet. We hope to have a few alternate locations to mix up the fun.  Email me with any questions or if you are interested in joining them.

Save the Date – Wednesday September 10th for the YWCA Open House – I have some exciting news. I have been telling you about the YWCA special evening on September 10th at 7:30pm.  They are going to announce new membership opportunities and classes at the YWCA. Classes will be whole grain bread baking, beginning crochet (hat or scarf), gardening, a mom and kid hike and so much more. Classes are available to all but YWCA members will get to attend at a lesser rate. The exciting part is that TMN members can join the YWCA at $25 year (vs. $45). So join at the market on the 16th or come to the event on September 10th. Spread the word. Fun, Friendship and Philanthropy…. 

TMN SPECIAL EVENT: The Library Open House’s are back – beginning Monday September 15th – TMN members are welcome to the WW library at 10:30am (they are closed to the public). TMN member Katie Christianson will be there with Jitterbug Dance to get the wiggles out from 10:45-11am. This is a great time to meet other moms, enjoy the library and let your kids get a little crazy. Other dates are – October 20th, November 17th and December 15th

The WWPS is having more school boundary meetings to review the updated plans.  Wed, Sept. 10th – 7pm at Green Park, Wed. Oct 1 – 7pm at Blue Ridge and Wed. Oct 29th – 7pm at Prospect Point.

TMN SPECIAL EVENT: A CAbi show hosted by The Moms' Network to raise money for our membership scholarship fund. Meet TMN member Nanci Thorsnes and view Carol Anderson's latest collection of fall clothes. The event is 7pm on Thursday, September 18th at Impress Salon.

Thursday, September 25th is Dagoberto Gilb, author of Gritos, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and many more novels including his new released The Flowers. His books are considered a lens on multicultural America.  The event is 7pm at Kimball Hall.

Wednesday, October 29th is Marie Howe, author of three volumes of poetry and will as the co-editor of a book of essays.  She has won many awards and her work has been published in publications all over the work. The event is at 7pm at Kimball Hall.

OCTOBER

TMN SPECIAL EVENT: Dr. Jen Bolduc is going to meet us for our next “coffee chat” on Tuesday, October 7th at 7pm at Book & Game.  This is a chance to speak with a pediatrician in an open setting without your children. Come ask questions and learn the news on the health front. 

TMN SPECIAL EVENT: 2nd Annual Walk for Breast Cancer – reserve Saturday October 11th (October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month) for our TMN breast cancer walk.  I am working with Isenhower Cellars (thank you members Denise Isenhower and Debi Morehead) on a new pink item.  We will meet at Verve at 8am and walk 3 miles. More information to come soon. 

Save the Date – 2008 Children’s Forum is Sunday, October 19th from 5-8:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church.  This event has not happened for the past four years and is it a great opportunity and discuss the well being of children/families in WW, learn of resources available, child care, risk factors for our kids (pit falls)  and how to volunteer.  The event is free. There is a free dinner, child care, a guest peaker and material.

TMN SPECIAL EVENT: On Tuesday October 28th, Samantha Bowen the Director of the Early Education Coalition is going to talk to meet with us to distribute Born Learning tools for 0-5 year olds and discuss how to get your kids ready for kindergarten.  We will meet at 7pm at Book & Game. 

NOVEMBER

TMN SPECIAL EVENT: Our next books is “The Lake of Dead Languages” by Carol Goodman.  This is a dark mystery, but not scary.  Once again Book & Game is offering this book at 20% to all TMN members. We will meet on Thursday, November 6th at 7pm at Book & Game. Enjoy reading.

Summer Programs: 
The YWCA Fun Factory is a free arts/crafts/outdoor games program for kids 5-9.  We will be in the major parks in WW – call 525-2570.

WW Parks & Rec Youth Summer Programs include swim lessons (at Whitman), summer swim team, soccer, flag football, youth tennis, summer camps – www.ci.walla-walla.wa.us then click on city recreation programs. 

UPlay & free lunch in the parks – lots of activities lead by staff and volunteers include art, soccer, YWCA fun factory etc. Registration is done on site the first day a child attends UPlay. It is for 7-12 year olds.

It is at Pioneer Park, Washington Park, Jefferson Park, Eastgate Lions Park June 16- August 15th (closed July 4th)  10am to 3pm, Monday – Friday.

Fort Walla Walla Days – June 14-15th – Re-enactors for the Civil War, Mexican Wal, 1870’s war and cultural demonstrations from Native Americans.


FUN FOR THE FAMILY

Planet Walk has opened at Fort Walla Walla. The 8,996 foot trail is an education model of the 3.7 billion-mile solar system. The exhibit is along the bicycle and walking path south of the Vet Administration Medical Center.
